Resumen de Evaluation of Zingiberaceae for resistance to ginger soft rot caused by Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzp.

P.G. Kavitha, G. Thomas

  • Soft rot caused by Pythium species is a highly destructive disease in ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.). The entire spectrum of commercial ginger germplasm available today is highly susceptible to this disease. Thirteen species belonging to six genera in family Zingiberaceae were assessed for their reactions to Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzp., the most prevalent agent of ginger soft rot disease. Considerable variation was observed for Pythium infection among the species evaluated. Zingiber zerumbet (L.) Smith, a wild congener of the cultivated ginger, was identified as a potential donor of soft rot resistance for the genetic improvement of ginger.
