This article analyses, within a particular Catalan text and its English translation, the occurrences in which the verb tenir to have is not used in its generally-accepted basic sense, but acts as a support verb, with a noun phrase or a prepositional phrase. The extent to which this use is reflected in the English translation of the text is also analysed. The first goal of the paper is to show that evidence from parallel corpora supports the consideration of support verb constructions as multi-word units, rather than as the simple combination of two independent lexical items. The second goal is to show that the acceptance of this idea can prove advantageous for practical applications. Finally, the paper aims to be a contribution to the constrastive description of Catalan and English.
