    Es una característica de las sociedades tradicionales el hecho de establecer implícitamente una relación de oposición entre el territorio habitado por ellas mismas y el resto del espacio desconocido e indeterminado que les circunda. Por extensión, podemos trasplantar esa diferenciación a otros niveles de conceptualización del espacio, tales como utilización de elementos, formas de comportamiento, organización social, etc. Por otra parte, lo desconocido produce un sentimiento de temor y conlleva la necesidad de protección, pero al mismo tiempo, también produce una atracción, un deseo de conocimiento, de ocupación de dicho espacio. En la mentalidad popular vasca, lo desconocido y ese doble sentimiento que origina se manifiestan en multitud de relatos y creencias relativos a Mari y las Lamias.

    It is a characteristic of traditional societies the opposition they usually establish between the inhabited land and the unknown and unlimited surrounding territory. The differentiation might also apply to other conception levels of the space, such as the use of different elements, patters of behavior, social organization, etc. The unknown produces a sense of fear and, consequently, a need for shelter, but at the same time it also produces an attraction, a wish to known, to retrieve that space. In the Basque popular thinking, the unknown and this twofold feeling it produces, are shown in many tales about Mari and the Lamias.

    Gizarte tradizionalen ezaugarri bat, eurek bizi diren lurraldearen eta inguruko espazio ezezagun eta mugagabearen artean ezartzen duten kontrakotasunean datza. Desberdintzapen hori beste konzeptualizazio maila batzuetara ere heda dezakegu eta espaziotzat hurrengo alderdi hauek hartu, hala nola, elementu-erabilera, portaera-motak, jarduerak, gizarte-antolamendua, ... Ezezagunak beldur-sentimendua eta babes-premia sortzen du. Baina era berean, ekarpen bat ere sortzen du, ezagutu gura bat, espazio hori harrapatu eta kontrolatu nahia. Ezezaguna eta horrek sortzen duen sentimendu bikoitz hori, Mari eta Lamiei buruzko hainbat eta hainbat ipuin eta sineskeretan agertzen zaigu euskal pentsamolde herritarrean.
