This paper presents a study of the uses of military insignia in the Ancient World, from the Bronze Age to the end of the Roman Republic. We first insist on the practical uses of these objects and establish a typology, drawing on a wide range of examples extending to the modern era. We then emphasize long-term tendencies, analysing the process by which a set of basically practical objects was given an ‘added value’ of symbolic and even religious nature, that finally outlasted their primary function, extending from the military to the civilian realm.
