È arrivato il momento, nelle vicende della critica letteraria americana, delle recriminazioni e dei pentimenti. Dopo gli anni degli entusiasmi (lo sbarco dello strutturalismo francese nel 1966; l�arrivo del decostruzionismo nei primi anni Settanta con la conquista della cittadella di Yale; le battaglie in favore del femminismo, del riscatto delle minoranze etniche e dell�orgoglio gay; il lancio a Berkeley nei primi anni Ottanta del neo-storicismo; l�arrivo dall�Inghilterra negli anni Novanta dei «cultural studies»), dopo gli anni delle teorizzazioni spericolate e delle pretese totalizzanti della Teoria, scritta con la lettera maiuscola, sono arrivati la stagnazione teorica, l�indebolimento complessivo degli studi letterari e umanistici nelle Università, il disorientamento, la sfiducia.
Il ritorno delle questioni etiche, caratterizzi tre avvenimenti che hanno cambiato l�atmosfera nella situazione della critica americana dell�ultimo decennio. Si tratta dello scandalo suscitato dalla figura di Paul De Man, del premio per il peggior esempio di scrittura critica assegnato alla filosofa femminista di Berkeley Judy Butler e del tranello Alan Sokal ha teso ai due direttori della rivista Social Text, Stanley Aronowitz e Andrew Ross. Tutti e tre gli episodi, hanno contribuito a screditare il decostruzionismo, il culto per la Teoria, il tecnicismo ossessivo e il gergo pretenzioso di tanta critica letteraria americana.

The moment of recriminations and repentances has arrived in the vicissitudes of the American literary criticism. It was inevitable. After years of enthusiasm (the unloading of French structuralism in 1966, the arrival of deconstrucionism in the first years of the Seventies with the Yale�s city conquest, the battle in favour of feminism, the rescue of the ethnic minorities and of the gay pride, the neohistoricism launching, in the first years of the Eighties, England�s arrival with its Cultural Studies) after years of theorising and totalizing pretension of the Theory �written with capital letter- it arrived at theoretical immobility, weakening of the literary and humanistic studies in the University, disorientation, distrust.
The return to ethic matters characterizes three events which have changed the atmosphere of the American criticism in the last decade. These are the following: the scandal provoked by the figure of Paul De Mann, the prize for the worst example of written critical assigned to the Berkeley�s feminist philosopher, Judy Butler and the Alan Sokal�s monotonous repetition to the Social Text�s directors, Stanley Aranowitz and Andrew Ross. All of the three episodes have contributed to discredit deconstructionism, the cult for theory, the obsessive technicism and the pretentious slang of so much American literary criticism.
