Samples from the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean) were studied in order to characterise the organic rich layers recorded during marine isotope stage 7 from a geochemical point of view. X ray fluorescence measurements were carried out at a 1cm-resolution and variations in terrigenous and biogenic elements were observed during the whole studied interval (245-190 kyr), suggesting more carbonate production during warmer periods, and more arrival of terrigenous material during lower-sea level substages. Organic rich layers were characterized by high biogenic barium and low Si/Al, which can be interpreted as increasing surface productivity or better preservation of the organic material, and more river discharge due to more abundant precipitations.
