Giraudoux saw in a rugby team a representative sample of society itself. Seventy-eight years later the idea might be considered correct, or at least stimulating, provided one admits that the sample has undergone considerable transformations, which, in the end, reflect quite well the transformations that have affected our ways of life and our actions, rugby appearing as a metaphor of society itself.

Giraudoux voyait dans une équipe de rugby un échantillon représentatif de la société elle-même. Reprenant la même idée soixante-dix-sept ans plus tard, on peut la trouver juste, en tout cas stimulante, à condition d’observer que l’échantillon en question a subi des évolutions considérables qui, finalement, reflètent assez bien celles qui ont affecté nos modes de vivre et d’agir, faisant du rugby une métaphore de la société elle-même.
