    La extraordinaria afirmación del culto a la Virgen María en Occidente durante la baja Edad Media fue el resultado de un proceso de deducción lógica por parte de los creyentes, quienes lo fueron construyendo a partir de los atributos propios de su maternidad divina. Como fuentes testimoniales para el período estudiado se han seleccionado las expresiones del sentimiento mariano de Iñigo López de Mendoza, marqués de Santillana; Juan Ruíz, arcipreste de Hita, y Francisco Petrarca, naturales de la península ibérica los dos primeros y florentino éste último.
