Amazonas en el siglo XX: Wonder Woman, actualización de un mito

    Después de muchos años en el olvido, Ias Amazonas volvieron a tener su momento de gloria en el s. XX; aquella raza de míticas guerreras que tanto odio y admiración habían causado en el mundo clásico resurgen de sus cenizas y con un renovado esplendor en la América de los años 40. Las temibles y crueles guerreras, hijas del sanguinario Ares, vuelven a la vida como correctas discípulas de Atenea, erigiéndose en salvadoras del mundo moderno.

    Una vez más los mitos y sus historias sirven a los fines del hombre, y son moldeados por él para satisfacer sus necesidades; siendo esto lo que trato de mostrar en mi estudio. En plena II Guerra Mundial se recurre a un mito ancestral, Ias Amazonas y se moldea conforme a las necesidades del momento', se Ias pacifica, se Ias vuelve menos belicosas, su carácter andrógino desaparece e incluso se alteran sus orígenes divinos2, para dar ugar a una nueva heroína, Wonder Woman. Al igual que ocurría con Ias Amazonas míticas, estamos ante una mujer que se mueve en un mundo de hombres, es el primer superhéroe femenino que aparece en el universo del cómic.

    After many years left behind, the Amazons regained their importance in the 20th century; that mythical race of female warriors that were the cause of so much hatred and admiration in the classical world revive from their ashes with a renewed splendour in America during the 1940s. The frightful and cruel she-warriors, daughters of the bloodthirsty Ares, came back to life like righteous pupils of Athena placing themselves as the savers of the modern world.

    Once again myths and their histories serve man's purpose, and they are moulded by him to satisfy his needs and this is what I have tried to show in my survey.

    During World War II an ancestral myth, namely the Amazons, is used and they are moulded according to the current needs3 . They are pacified, they become less aggressive, their androgyny nature disappears and even their divine origins are changed . So, a new hero appears in this case, a heroine, Wonder Woman. Just like the case of mythical Amazons, we are before a woman who lives in a man's world, she's the first female superhero that appears in comics.
