  • Resumen
    • This research takes into account the problems of the government of the mining district of Huancavelica, where was situated the most important mercury deposit of the American continent, in the period of Antonio de Ulloa's successor, the engineer Carlos de Beranger. Beranger took charge of the government of Huancavelica temporarily and by Viceroy Amat's direct order. In consequence, from Ulloa's point of view, his successor became immediately an enemy who, instead of going 00 with his policy of regeneration bound to favour Crown's interests against the Gremio de Mineros (Miners' Guild), would seek an alliance with them in order to run down his government and keep the privileges of the creole society. In fact, though it is true that Beranger obeyed the Viceroy's opinions, which were unlike Ulloa's, rather by reasons of functions than of aims, it is also sure that he tried to maintain the operating ways of the governors who depended on the central government. Beranger found a difficult balance between administration and the Gremio de Mineros and moreover got an increase in the mercury production. However, he did not stop the endemic evil of corruption nor, by lack of time and means, succeeded in modernizing the mining exploitation.
