    Cuando los españoles llegaron al México Antiguo existían en las sociedades nativas individuos sometidos que denominaron «esclavos» en castellano. Este ensayo estudia la esclavitud indígena prehispánica y la situación concreta de las mujeres y los hombres que en náhuatl, la lengua hegemónica en el altiplano mexicano, se denominaban tlacotin. También intenta mostrar para épocas posteriores la compleja coexistencia de formas de esclavitud y semiesclavitud en el mundo del trabajo y las diversas características de las condiciones de trabajo en distintas regiones tanto en el periodo colonial como en el independiente de la historia de México.

    When the Spaniards arrived to Ancient Mexico, there existed in the indigenous societies human beings living in bondage that where called «slaves» in Spanish. This essay explores the specific circumstances of the life of these «slaves», men and women, that where called in Nahuatl, the old Mexican dominant Indian language, tlacotin. At the same time, in order to show the complex coexistence in later times of different forms of bondage in the world of labor, other forms of un-free working conditions are described, forms that where characteristic for the different regions during the colonial and the independent period of Mexican history.
