Papers contains description of Automatic Identification System (AIS) as a source of information useful for collision avoidance purposes.Theoretical considerations are illustrated with results of the experimental measurements of accouracy of data transmitted by AIS and its comparison with accuracy of information presentd by radar and radar tracking aids and conclusions defined on the base of two years exploitation of the AIS shore base station by Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) in the Gulf of Gdansk.
