• The Authors analyze in a historical and cultural perspective the role practiced by positivist psychiatry and criminology in the institution of the criminal insane asylum as a place reserved to the treatment of the mentally ill as author of crime.

  In Italy, during the nineteenth century, both juridical and scientific learnings fought for the supremacy in the judicial field. At last, despite the humanitarian and progressive aims, the proposals of the Lombrosian criminology contributed to an objective amplification of the network of the disciplinary interventions an deviance.
