    En este artículo se analiza la jerarquía y localización de las oficinas de la banca privada en Euskadi en el período 1978-87. Se trata de un período caracterizado por el descenso del empleo en el sector (-14,46%), y a la vez por un aumento en el número de oficinas (+22, 75%), coincidente con una etapa de saturación en la difusión de la banca privada en la que se produce además una crisis de algunas empresas bancarias menores. Con posterioridad a estas fechas ha tenido lugar la fusión de algunos grandes bancos, y se anuncian transformaciones importantes en el sector que cambiarán la configuración analizada aquí, análisis que incluye un estudio del comportamiento competitivo espacial de las principales empresas.

    The hierarchy and location of retail banking offices in the Basque Country during the period 1978-87 is analysed in this paper. This period is characterized as a saturation stage in the spatial diffusion process of retail banking that coincides with an structural change of the sector (a decreasing rate of -14,46% in employment and a increasing rate of +22,75% in the total number of offices). On the other hand there is a crisis of minor banking firms. Since the last date two important mergings of banking firms at the nationallevel have occurred, and other important transformations of the bank sector are announced for the future. so the pattem here analysed will change in the next years. Here the emphasis is made on the spatial competition behavior of the firms in the urban hierarchy.
