Desde un punto de vista ictiológico Extremadura puede considerarse como una región muy interesante por ser donde muchas especies encuentran sus límites de distribución. Por otro lado aparecen importantes endemismos y especies migratorias. La fauna piscícola extremeña está constituida por 20 especies nativas y 11 introducidas pertenecientes en conjunto a 13 familias. La distribución de estás especies en Extremadura no es bien conocida y se desconocen los efectos que determinadas amenazas ejercen sobre los peces.

Extremadura have very interest in the Iberian Peninsula from an ichthyological point of view. Firstly is an area of transition where some species found its limits of distribution. Second is an area where some important endemisms occur and finally in the Extremadurian waters still some migratory species can be found. The ichthyological fauna of Extremadura is composed by 31 species. Of these 20 are natives and 11 exotics belonging to 11 families.
However the distribution of these species are poorly known and the effects of some threats on has not evaluated yet.
