    Contrary to what certain anthropologists tend to claim, the caste system in India, with all its injustices, is not necessarily considered by the Dalits (lntouchables) as natural or inevitable. As they lack economic and political resources, their resistance is mainly cultural. Sometimes this takes the form of affirming their humanity and elementary rationality which is ignored by the dominating culture. Sometimes there is a call for a retum to the roots that have been betrayed by the elite, or for a correct reinterpretation of the values professsed by the brahmans. As expressions of a popular counter-culture, the recentmovements ofDalits in India show these different attitudes in various degrees.

    Contrairement a ce que l 'approche de certains anthropologues tend a suggérer, le systeme des castes en Inde, avec toutes ses injustices, n 'est pas forcément considéré par les Dalits (lntouchables) comme naturel ou inévitable. Faute de moyens économiques et politiques, leur résistance est d'abord culturelle. Elle se traduit tantót par l'affirmation d'une humanité et d'une rationalité élémentaires ignorées par la culture dominante, tantót par l'appel a un retour aux racines trahies par !'élite, tantót encore par l'invitation a une réinterprétation correcte des valeurs professées par les brahmanes. Expressions d'une contre-culture populaire, les mouvements récents des Dalits en lnde illustrent ces différentes attitudes a des degrés divers.
