    The fable contrasting the extravant grasshopper and the thrifty ant was taken up in the Spanish Renaissance to pit art against productive growth, mental work against manual labour. This false opposition cannot be resolved except by hard-working grasshoppers and artistically inclined ants. Development and poetry are not opposed to each other and even during the dramatic economic situation that Cuba has been going through since the fall of the Eastern regimes, culture has to be saved.

    Cultural policy in Cuba has always wanted to be open. It has suffered the effects of the dogmatic lack of culture in Soviet manuals, as well as the attraction ofthe "zoological hubbub"ofNorth American society ...

    The tradition of José Martí, which was taken up by the Castro revolution, has sparked off the creative ferment of artistic production through supporting artistic creativity without demanding a "party card".

    Works of art must be judged in a climate with no prejudices. It is necessary to accept critica! art, refraining from instrumentalizing artists, for the creation of a genuine socialist humanism.

    La fable opposant la cigale prodigue et la fourmi épargnante fut reprise dans la Renaissance espagnole pour opposer art et croissance productive, travail de l' esprit et travail manuel. Cette fausse opposition ne peut se résoudre que par des cigales travailleuses et des fourmis au sens artistique. Développement et poésie ne s'opposent pas et meme dans la situation économiquement dramatique qu 'a vécue Cuba apres la chute des régimes del 'Est, il faut sauver la culture. La politique culturelle a Cuba s'est toujours voulue ouverte. Elle subit les effets del 'inculture dogmatique des manuels soviétiques, tout comme l'attraction du «brouhaha zoologique» de la société nord-américaine. La tradition de José Martl, reprise par la révolution castriste, a mis en valeur le bouillonnement créateur de la production artistique, donnant un appui a la créativité, sans exiger une «carie du parti». Les oeuvres d'art doivent etre jugées dans un climat sans préjugés.Il faut accepter un art critique, renoncer a instrumentaliser les artistes pour créer un véritable humanisme socialiste.
