    For the whole colonial period, the Afro-Asían world, with its huge territory and population, and its pockets of very ancient culture, its science and technology, with its centuries of tradition, was largely ignored by world civilization. This social tragedy affected all sectors of colonial society. But it was the intelligentsia who felt most strongly the effects of the foreign onslaught against the historical, cultural and spiritual heritage of the subjugated countries and their role in the national liberation struggles was often decisive. lt is now necessary to question the attitude ofthis cultural elite towards the domination ofthe West and as they are confronted with the new challenges of globalization. The intelligentsia of the countries of the South must be careful of falling into the pitfalls of the most retrograde traditionalism as well as avoiding excessive dependency on the West. They should be both the motor of a cultural decolonization and the catalyser of a beneficial linking up ofthe universal with the particular. The future of the developing world depends upon it.

    Pendant toute la période coloniale, le monde afro-asiatique, immense par son territoire et sa population, ses foyers de culture tres anciens, sa science, sa technologie et ses traditions multiséculaires, a été écarté de la civilisation mondiale. Cette tragédie sociale a marqué le sort de toutes les couches de la société coloniale. Mais c'est l'intelligentsia qui a senti le plus les effets de l'offensive étrangere contre l'héritage historique, culture! etspirituel des pays asservis, et le róle des intellectuels dans les luttes de libération nationale a souvent été décisif. Il convient aujourd'hui de s'interroger sur l'attitude de cette élite culturelle face a la domination de l 'Occident et face aux nouveaux défis de la mondialisation. En évitant les pieges du traditionalisme le plus obtus ou, al 'inverse, de I 'occidental is me le plus dépendant, I 'intelligentsia des pays du Sud se doit d'être a la fois le moteur d'une décolonisation des cultures et le catalyseur d'une articulation bénéfique de l'universel et du particulier.
