The Atlantic sector of the Strait of Gibraltar, between Cabo Roche and Tarifa, is characterised by a succession of more or less open bays, separated by headlandsorpromontories consisting of cliffs. Inside these baysl associated with the estuaries of water courses, marshes (marismas) are actively developing as a result of sedimentation and infill. With the exception of the marismas of the Barbate, the rest of the marshy zones are small in extent, but not lacking in interest.
The particular conditions of the area of the Strait, together with reduced tidal range make the vegetation of these marismas show particular characteristics in the context of the coastal wetlands of the south-atlantic arc of the Iberian Peninsula.
This communication describes the different plant associations detected in the marismas of the Jara and Vega as well as the main zona1 variation in relation to topography and substrate. The results are compared with existing information on the vegetation of other marismas of the zone (e.g. of the Pulmones) and of the rest of the Golfo de Cadiz.
