  • Resumen
    • This paper presents the experiences of a pilot project in five higher education institutions (HEIs) in Central Asia. The TOHOST-CA initiative, funded within the framework of TEMPUS-TACIS, not only unifies curricula in hospitality and tourism studies among three Central Asian countries, but also facilitates the introduction of a virtual open source platform for the delivery of online courses, and thus the opportunity to embrace the e-learning paradigm. In the wake of this initiative, we present a model of e-readiness that advocates a three-pronged approach to measuring the level of preparation of the five HEIs involved as regards the introduction of online learning activities in their classrooms. The progress of these HEIs towards implementing learning technologies for tourism studies is highlighted; particularly the degree to which their abilities, based on the strategies and policies available, enhance and sustain electronic delivery of course content. Additionally, the special economic, political, and sociotechnological issues facing the administrators of tourism studies in these specific countries are also considered.
