    La decisión de la líder indígena y Premio Nobel de la Paz Rigoberta Menchú de lanzar su candidatura presidencial para las elecciones del 9 de septiembre en Guatemala sacudió el panorama político. Aunque las encuestas la ubican en cuarto lugar, su postulación tiene posibilidades de ascender, quitándole votos al favorito, el centrista Álvaro Colom. Cualquiera sea el resultado, el próximo presidente deberá enfrentar los desafíos de reducir la pobreza, combatir el crimen organizado y el narcotráfico y avanzar en políticas de inclusión de los pueblos indígenas, todo esto en el contexto de un Estado débil y un sistema político fragmentado.

    The political panorama in Guatemala has been profoundly affected as a result of the decision of indigenous leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú to run for the Presidency in the elections scheduled for the 9th of September. Although current surveys place her fourth among the candidates, she has possibilities of improving her position by resting votes from the current favorite, the centrist Álvaro Colom. Whatever the result, the incoming president will need to confront the challenge of reducing poverty, fighting organized crime and drug-trafficking and promoting policies designed to include the indigenous communities; all this in the context of a weak State and a fragmented political system.
