    El éxito de los intentos reeleccionistas, el avance político de las mujeres y la cuestionada capacidad de los organismos electorales en algunos países son algunos rasgos importantes del intenso proceso de elecciones que vivió América Latina en los últimos 14 meses. En un contexto macroeconómico estable y en el marco de un crecimiento razonable, hay motivos para ser optimistas. Pero, aunque la situación ha mejorado y el riesgo de una nueva ola autoritaria parece lejano, es necesario consolidar instituciones legítimas y eficaces y promover la cultura democrática, únicos diques de contención frente a la antipolítica, los liderazgos mesiánicos y los riesgos del neopopulismo.

    The success of re-election attempts, the political advances of women and doubts about the capacity of the electoral authorities in several countries, are some of the important features of the numerous elections in Latin America during the last 14 months. Within a stable macro-economic context and with expectations of a reasonable growth, there are reasons for optimism. However, despite the fact that the situation has improved and the risk of a new wave of authoritarianism seems to have ceded, there is a need to consolidate legitimate and effective institutions and promote a democratic culture, the only effective barriers in the face of anti-politics, messianic leaders and neo-populism.
