La integración energética debería apuntar a mejorar los niveles de sustentabilidad, con un concepto amplio de desarrollo que contemple la biodiversidad y los aspectos sociales del crecimiento. Sin embargo, los proyectos de articulación energética vigentes, desde la Iniciativa para la Integración de la Infraestructura Regional Sudamericana hasta el promocionado Gasoducto del Sur, apuntan solamente a construir infraestructura para bajar los precios e impulsar el crecimiento. Se trata, en suma, de una interconexión física para transportar electricidad y gas natural, que no tiene en cuenta cuestiones como la eficiencia energética, el cuidado del ambiente o el desarrollo sustentable.

Energy integration should contribute to improve the prospects for sustainability, on the basis of a broad vision of development which embraces biodiversity and the social dimension of growth. However, the current projects designed to integrate energy policies, from the Initiative to Integrate the South American Regional Infrastructure to the Great Southern Gas Pipeline, are conceived simply in terms of reducing prices and promoting growth. In short, what is being proposed is a physical interconnection to transport electricity and natural gas, without any concern for problems like energy efficiency, the protection of the environment or sustainable development.
