Bronchopulmonary dysplasia/chronic lung disease of childhood constitutes a heterogeneous group of respiratory diseases that are increasingly frequent in our general population. This is mainly due to the higher rate of survival of newborns of very low birth weight. It is a highly complex, multisystemic disease with a multifactorial etiology and pathogenesis, and a variable clinical picture, with involvement of different organs and systems, as well as very diverse diagnostic and therapeutic options. The latter aspects must be understood in depth to achieve a good control of this disease. For that reason, individualized follow-up and a multidisciplinary approach are required, in which the implantation of a well-structured program of intervention and control becomes necessary. The objective of this article is to describe the major problems associated with the patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia/ chronic lung disease in childhood, as well as to design a management plan after discharge from the neonatology service.
