  • Resumen
    • In 1986 a Mexican governmental commission raised the question of the active participation of Mexico and America in world history. At the same time studies on the impact of American goods on European economies and societies intensified. The present article tries to discern the general patterns by which these overseas goods affected production and consumption in Europe in the long run. Imported products from America like indigo, rubber and high quality tobacco only influenced European agriculture if they were superior to an older European good. When European demand of these new products increased to a great extent, at first Europeans tried to cultivate American plants in other tropical regions of the world and afterwards developed chemical processes for the confection of substitutes.
