    The French language’s territory can be schematized with three circles : the cradle of the French language, France and its steps. For the French language’s vitality, the economical prosperity and creative capacity of our country are determining as they are at the heart of this circle. The second circle is the territory of French colonial expansion with successive historical layers. The third circle is the sphere of diffusion of the French language beyond the boundaries of the French-speaking world. With the globalization, more communities are gathered around a language rather than around a territorial attachment. The Frenchspeaking world can take advantage of this phenomenon. The French language can be considered as the language of a global community, “deterritorialized”.

    Le territoire du français peut se schématiser sous la forme de trois cercles : le berceau de la langue française, la France et ses marches. Pour la vitalité de la langue française, la prospérité économique et la capacité créatrice de notre pays, au coeur de ce cercle, sont déterminantes. Le deuxième cercle est le territoire de l’expansion coloniale française avec ses strates historiques successives. Le troisième cercle est l’aire de diffusion de la langue française au-delà du périmètre de la francophonie. Avec la mondialisation se multiplient des communautés rassemblées par des langues plus que par l’attachement à un territoire. La francophonie peut tirer parti de ce phénomène. Il faut penser le français comme la langue d’une communauté globale, « déterritorialisée ».
