    As far as narrative curiosity is concerned, it may prove rewarding to draw a parallel between Heliodorus and Barbey d'Aurevilly. Narrative curiosity is first studied as a novelistic convention and a technical device which supports narration itself. Both novelists however not only use narrative curiosity but also draw it in the forefront of the novel as if they wanted to exhibit it. It is argued that the excessive representation of narrative curiosity is not meant to mirror the reader's desire but should be defined as a provocative gesture towards the reader. Besides, an unexpected gap, or even a conflict, between narrative curiosity and the novel as a genre, can be traced.

    En rapprochant Héliodore et Barbey d'Aurevilly, l'on cherche à mieux définir le statut de la curiosité narrative représentée dans le texte romanesque. L'on étudie d' abord la curiosité narrative comme une convention et l'on considère le pacte narratif où elle se manifeste comme un topos qui valorise la narration. Mais chez Héliodore et Barbey la curiosité est objet d'une hyperbole, elle est mise en avant, exhibée; on se demande alors quel est l'effet et le sens de cette exhibition: provocation au lecteur plus que miroir de son désir, elle révèle en outre un conflit inattendu entre le désir d'histoire et l'écriture romanesque.
