    En la primera parte de este artículo se analiza la relación entre el protagonista de la historia, Quinn, y la ciudad que habita (o la ciudad que le habita). Aceptando el caos que le rodea, el detective creado por Auster hace un concienzudo viaje hacia las incertidumbres de la vida humana y la poca fiabilidad de los hechos que configuran lo que ahora llamamos la realidad postmoderna. El género utilizado será un importante reflejo de esta situación. En la segunda parte tenemos la oportunidad de contrastar la forma literaria con el soporte fílmico y de observar cómo una misma ciudad puede ser determinante, de una forma muy diferente, sobre otro personaje que, eso sí, también se encuentra trágicamente sólo entre la multitud.

    The relationship between the main character of the novel, called Quinn, and the city where he lives, New York, is analyzed in the first part of this article. The detective created by Auster, accepting the chaos that surrounds him, embarks on a conscientious trip to the human life uncertainties and the trustworthiness of the facts happened in the so-called postmodern reality. An important reflex of this situation is the genre that he uses. Subsequently, in the second part, we have the opportunity of contrasting the novel with the film; in that case, we could appreciate how the same city can be decisive, in a very different way, to another character that lives tragically alone among the crowd.
