The Shield of Heracles demonstrates the limits of the interpolationist criticism when it applies to archaic literature and to the poetics of imitation, that is to a corpus that does not correspond to our modem conception of a text. At all levels we are confronted to different possible versions and the status of the poem itself is ambiguous in its relation to the hesiodic Catalogue of Women. The question is not so much 'how are we to decide about the authentic reading?', which means excluding from the text the condemned version, as 'should ,we make such a decision?'

Le Bouclier d'Hérac1es est un texte qui fait échec el la notion d'interpolation par l'esthétique de l'imitation qu'il met en oeuvre (il se coule en permanence dans le moule d'autres textes) autant que par la tradition littéraire el laquelle il appartient, héritière de la composition orale (mise en question de l'unicité de l'auteur). Les parcours de lecture qu'il offre sont pluriels (doublets el l'échelle microstructurelle; articulation au corpus hésiodique), entre lesquels toute hiérarchie semble impossible. On s'interrogera donc moins sur la possibilité d'opérer un tel choix que sur sa nécessité: comment rendre compte d'un texte multiple?
