En el presente estudio se repasa la pervivencia de la figura y de la obra Juan Meléndez Valdés, el poeta mejor poeta español del siglo XVIII, con motivo del 250 aniversario de su nacimiento, que coincidió con el fatídico día 11 de marzo de 2004. Después de examinar los altibajos del éxito de su obra a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos, se valoran las circunstancias que influyeron en el poco éxito del citado 250 aniversario.

In this essay we have a look at the survival of the figure and works of Juan Meléndez Valdés, the best Spanish poet of the XVIII century, because of the 250 years anniversary of his birth, that was coincident with the ominous 11th March 2004. After examining the ups and downs of his works through the two last centuries, we value the circumstances that have had influence in the little succers of the above mentioned anniversary.
