Resumen de Contact linguistique: le cas du rapport entre le grec et le copte

La nature, l'intensité et le résultat de l'interférence linguistique entre grec et égyptien dans l'antiquité tardive est une question controversée encore débattue. On voudrait ici contribuer à une mise en perspective linguistique du phénomène, tirant parti des plus récents développements de la recherche sur le contact linguistique. Le recours à certains outils théoriques tels que la distinction entre emprunt et permutation de code pragmatique pourrait en effet se révéler particulièrement profitable dans l'interprétation des emprunts apparemment abondants du copte au grec, et la comparaison avec d'autres situations historiques de contact récemment ou nouvellement étudiées est susceptible d'enrichir considérablement la réflexion sur le cas du copte. Cette démarche implique un retour critique sur certaines conceptions très particulières du changement linguistique et de ses motivations.

Nature, intensity and result of the linguistic interference between the Greek and Egyptian languages in late Antiquity is a controversial theme, still open to debate. This contribution simply aims at providing a sound linguistic background taking into account most recent developments in the field of contact linguistics. Some theoretical tools like the distinction between borrowing and pragmatic code-switching could in fact turn out to be of particular relevance to the interpretation of the apparently numerous Greek borrowings in Coptic, and the comparison with other historical situations of contact recently or newly investigated has much to offer to anyone interested in the case of Coptic. The process involves a critical overview of positions held by some specialists whom ideological bias about cultural hierarchy has led to a peculiar understanding of linguistic change and its motivations.
