Resumen de Laicidad, laicismo, relativismo y democracia

El ensayo defiende la laicidad como doctrina de la neutralidad del Estado democrático ante cualquier convicción relativa a la religión, incluidas las creencias no religiosas. Tomando como motivo de debate un documento de los obispos españoles, se exploran las diferencias entre laicidad y laicismo, entendido este último como legítima posición privada ajena a la religión que un Estado laico debe respetar. Se defiende además que el laicismo no debe identificarse con el relativismo en materia religiosa y moral y que el pluralismo religioso e ideológico impone para religiosos y laicistas el procedimiento democrático como único medio justificado de decisión por encima de los diferentes criterios sustantivos de justicia.

The paper defends laicity as the doctrine of the netrality of the democratic State as regards to the holding of any religious or non religious belief. A document issued by the Spanish bishops gives cause for the distinction between laicity and laicism. I understand the latter position as the legitimate private stance, alien to religious faith, which the State ought to respect. I also defend that laicism should not be identified as moral or religious relativism. On behalf of religious and ideological pluralism, the democratic procedure stands, for believes and laicits, as the sole justified method of decision, on top of their different conceptions of what justice demands from a substantive point of view.
