    La reaparición de este cuadro permite añadirlo a las seis obras conservadas (firmadas o documentadas) de este pintor sevillano. Se trata, además, de un retrato institucional de gran importancia y es el único mencionado por Ceán Bermúdez en su Diccionario. La obra no está firmada pero la reconstrucción de su biografía desde que se hallaba en poder del cardenal hasta el presente, confirma su identificación iconográfica y estilística. En este ensayo se redescubre esta pintura de Tovar, se interpretan en su contexto original algunos de los detalles que en él aparecen y se establecen comparaciones con otros retratos de este importante pionero de la pre-ilustración española.

    The reappearance of this picture makes it possible to add it to the six surviving works (either signed or documented) by this Sevillian painter. It is, besides, an institutional portrait of great importance and the only one mentioned by Ceán Bermúdez in his Dictionary. The work is not signed but the reconstruction of its history from the moment when it belonged to the Cardinal until the present corroborates its iconographic and stylistic identification. In this essay the painting by Tovar is rediscovered, some of the details present there are interpreted in their original context and comparisons with other portraits of this pioneer of the Spanish pre-Enlightment are made
