    El estallido de la guerra entre España y Francia, tras la ejecución de Luis XVI, desató un clima de xenofobia y persecución en contra de los franceses que residían en Nueva España. La Sala del Crimen, el gobierno de la ciudad de México y el tribunal de la Inquisición instruyeron causas contra varios de ellos, acusándolos de secundar las máximas de Ia Revolución Francesa y de conspirar contra las legítimas autoridades. El famoso Ignacio Borunda, célebre por haber enredado al padre Mier con sus deducciones guadalupanas, quiso convertirse en detective y logró enmarañar una de las causas judiciales con una serie de conjeturas inverosímiles. A partir de este caso, divertido y patético a la vez, el artículo explora la situación política del momento, los temores y las expectativas del gobierno y la compleja relación entre la administración de justicia y los rumores públicos.

    The outbreak of war between Spain and France, after the execution of Louis XVI, unleashed a climate of xenophobia and persecution against frenchmen that resided in New Spain. The Hall of Crime, the government of Mexico City and the Inquisition initiated causes charging them of supporting the ideas of the French Revolution and of conspiracy against Spanish authorities. The famous Ignacio Borunda, renowned for having deceived father Mier with theories related to the cult of the Virgin of Guadalupe, trespassed his court duties, acted as a detective and managed to entangle one of the judiciary causes with a series of unlikely conjectures. Based on this whole affair, amusing and pathetic at the same time, the author of this study explores the political situation at the time, the fears and expectations of Spanish government and the complex relationship between justice administration and public gossip.
