This article refers to a recent historiographical debate and points out to the fact, that the construction of a national memory in republican Venezuela is based on a confusion between historical discourse and historical myths. From the period of Independence, civic liturgies lead to the affirmation of collective imaginary (Le. the cult of Bolivar), which substitutes an historical consciousness. But nowadays, professional historians do not insist any more on this national past circumscribed to Independence and to the 19th century, and seek to interpret recent crisis as the expression of dramatic changes in Venezuelan politics and society, and as the beginning of a new way to write the history of this country.
