With the disappearance of the central power and the beginning autonomy of the Argentine provinces in 1820, the Argentine Church encountered severe political and administrative problems. Therefore, to understand the period unti11880, one has to step down from a global view of the Church's situation, and 100k at the various regions that will later on conform the Argentine Republic, with their different shades of social reality. As a result, this article presents the province of Córdoba in the first decades of the XlXth century, focusing on the Church's part in the human intercourse. With the Church and the religion setting standards for the social order, the adjustrnents to the new political reality were very slow, and the Cordobese seem to have resisted to exchange the colonial splendor for the new social visions. Based on sources archived in Argentine and the Vatican, various examples from within the administration of the Church of Córdoba show that during the opening decades of the XIXth century this province was far from political modernity centered on the representation of free individuals.
