  • This paper investigates the origins of the territoriality and identity of Puebla before the crisis of the Spanish monarchy in 1808. Conceived as processes that started their development at different times, we want to understand the first moment they converge. The formulation of the local identity takes us back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while the territoriality leads us to the Bourbonic Reforms. The convergence is produced in 1801 through a radical decentralizing project that gives way to the desire of autonomy. An ordenanza from 1786 defined the territorial domain of the city, exceeding the municipal limits and the boundaries of the region dependent of the city of Puebla. At the same time the autonomist demand made use of the city's identity discourse.
