A ilustre casa de Ramires (1900) de Eça de Queirós se articula sobre dos ejes temporales que van sucediéndose en el discurso: a finales del siglo habita el vetusto solar de Santa Ireneia Gonçalo Mendes Ramires, joven hidalgo del más rancio abolengo portugués, quien escribe una historia sobre sus antepasados ambientada en la época alfonsina, La torre de Don Ramires, que se incluye en distintos momentos en la novela principal. Estos dos relatos no son autónomos; existen entre ellos relaciones temáticas y funcionales (por ejemplo, la simetría de los personajes de uno y otro), por lo que se puede hablar de un fenómeno de mise en abîme. Eça, con la novela medieval inserta, desobedece su regla acostumbrada de utilizar un lenguaje sencillo y de situar la ficción en el presente. La torre de Don Ramires es una parodia de la novela histórica sin dejar de ser ella misma una novela histórica.

Eça de Queirós' novel A ilustre casa de Ramires (1900) is built on two temporal axes unfolding alternately throughout the discourse. At the end of the nineteenth century Gonçalo Mendes Ramires lives in the ancient house of Santa Ireneia. This young descendant of the noblest Portuguese lineage is writing a story about his ancestors set in the age of King Alphonso II. This story, La torre de Don Ramires, is included at different moments in the main novel. These stories are not independent as there are thematic and functional relations between them (for instance, symmetry of the characters) establishing, thus, the mise en abîme effect. Eça, with this inserted medieval novel, breaks his usual role of using a simple style and placing the fiction in the present. La torre de Don Ramires parodies historical novels and, at the same time, is a historical novel itself.
