    Este artículo se ocupa de comentar determinados aspectos de una novela, The pillars of the earth, que incluye elementos históricos de interés. El periodo histórico más sombrío del medievo inglés aparece representado a través de unos personajes y de unas situaciones que muestran un misterio y una continuidad paralelos al desarrollo histórico. Mi propósito es mostrar la forma en que existen correspondencias entre los hechos narrados en la novela y lo que ha llegado hasta nuestros días a través de las crónica medievales. También me ocupo de precisar algunos elementos que contribuyen a dar una coherencia histórica al texto narrativo, como es el caso de determinados personajes, y los nombres propios.

    This paper aims at showing the ways in which a novel, The pillars of the earth, deals with one of the darkest episodes in the History of England. The blending of history and fiction is studied as an example of textuality which reveals the influence of medieval chronicles on the plot and on the fictional elements. My analysis looks into the correspondence between the narrative fiction elements and the actual historical facts alluded to throughout the narration. The paper also focuses its attention on onomastics as it deals with the historical coherence existent in the text and the levels of fiction relevant to characters and their names.
