Mi objetivo en este artículo es demostrar e ilustrar una comparación entre dos de los magos y sabios más famosos en el mundo literario, Merlín y Gandalf. Ambos personajes han gozado de una gran fama en sus públicos ya desde el momento en el que fueron creados. El nacimiento del primero, Merlín, se remonta a la antigua literatura céltica. Las crónicas latinas inglesas del siglo XII le confirieron una nueva imagen y finalidad, mucho más similar a la de Gandalf. Gandalf ha sido la creación de un singular escritor, J. R. R. Tolkien, un gran académico del siglo pasado principalmente interesado en la literatura sajona y en la tradición aliterativa del verso en inglés antiguo. En la caracterización de estos dos magos, podemos descubrir similitudes y diferencias que muestran las peculiaridades de lo maravilloso y de la fantasía debidas a la personalidad y a la época a la que pertenece cada escritor.

My purpose in this essay is to demonstrate and to illustrate a comparison between two of the most famous magicians and wisemen in the literary world, Merlin and Gandalf. Both characters have become famous and enjoyed great popularity ever since the moment they were created. The birth of the first one, Merlin, goes back to the ancient Celtic literature. The English Latin chronic1es of the 12th century gave him a new shape and role, much more similar to Gandalf's. Gandalf has been the creation of an only writer, J. R. R. Tolkien, a great scholar of the last century mainly interested in Saxon literature and the alliterative tradition in old English verse. In the characterization of these two magicians, we can find meaningful similarities and differences which show the peculiarities of the marvellous and the fantasy, resulting both from each of the writer's personality and epoch.
