In search of an alternative form of music education inquiry, I turned to narrative research. Aligned with case study research, narrative research grows out of four related genres: oral history, folklore, life history, and memoir. As a hybrid form, narrative research typically offers a vivid and intense biographical portrait with stories featuring characters, plots, times, and places¿all in the form of an emotional and moving account of a life.
Using examples of a narrative research project, I attempt to represent and interpret a music teacher¿s pedagogical approach within the context of cultural, educational, psychological, sociological, and musical perspectives. I believe narrative research offers meaning to music education by focusing on interpersonal and intercultural themes¿the very heartfelt issues often missing in our sanitized and overly formal music education literature.
