Demografía, educación, cambio estructural y convergenica: Galicia-España, 2001-2050

    Entre Galicia y España existen notables diferencias: (1) el tamaño relativo de las diferentes cohortes de la población no es el mismo; (2) la población ocupada gallega está menos educada; (3) el peso del sector primario es más elevado en Galicia; y (4) el producto medio por trabajador es un 20% inferior a la media española. Este trabajo explora qué parte de las diferencias en la composición sectorial y en los niveles de productividad media se debe a las diferencias en las estructuras de edades y educación. Igualando los niveles educativos de las nuevas cohortes, Galicia experimentaría un fuerte proceso de transformación sectorial: el peso del sector primario convergería a la media española y las diferencias de productividad se reducirían un 50%. Sin embargo, dicho proceso es lento y las diferencias son persistentes, ya que es preciso esperar a que las nuevas generaciones reemplacen a la población actual

    Notable differences exist between Galicia and Spain: (1) the relative size of the different cohorts of the population is not the same; (2) the Galician labor force is less educated; (3) the weight of the agricultural sector in Galicia is greater than in Spain; and, (4) the labor productivity is 20% lower than the Spanish average. This paper explores which part of the differences in the sectorial composition and in the levels of labor productivity are due to the differences in the structures of age and education. Equalizing the educational levels of the new cohorts, Galicia would experience a strong process of sectorial transformation: the weight of the primary sector is reduced to converge to the Spanish average and the differences of productivity would be reduced by 50%. Nevertheless, this process is slow and the differences are persistent, since it is necessary to wait for the new cohorts to replace the present population.
