Resumen
Ben Jonson and Fray Luis de León have been justly called the English and the Spanish Horaces respectively. Both were conscious that they were introducing the classical world to two flexible and powerful vernacular languages. They were also convinced of the necessity of translating the classics, Horace in particular, into these languages. Jonson translated Ars Poetica and two odes by Horace; Fray Luis translated parts of the Bible as well as Horace and other classical and Italian authors. They both translated the epode "Beatvs ille". This paper deals with the different approach they had in their translations, formal in the case of Jonson and dynamic in the case of Fray Luis. This is manifested in their use of vocabulary, their omissions and variations, their organization of the structure of the lines and even in the prosodic treatment of the poem. Both give an ethical interpretation of nature, and in both the praise of country life is an exaltation of innocence and freedom as opposed to the struggles, anxieties and servitude of urban life.
