Resumen de Un embajador de Inglaterra en Valladolid: 1649-1652

Luis Fernández Martín

  • The University of Valladolid, English Department, has made a study of the historical figure which was Lord Francis Cottington, Ambassador of England in Spain.

In this article, besides incorporating some accidental notes to his biography, we are reporting for the first time about the testament left by him on l6-IV-1652. This document confirms the deep changes that had taken place in the personal feelings of this British diplomat. From being a "great heretic" to become a "sincere catholic". From his indifference towards Spain to feel a warm sympathy to the Spaniards, this due mainly to the friendship with the Count of Gondomar, Spanish Ambassador in London. Last but not least, he became a lover of Valladolid and had a great predilection for this city where he spent the last years of his life and where (in accordance with his will) he was buried "till the day his remains could be taken to England".
