  • Translating Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark into a foreign language has traditionally proved a difficult task. The present version has been annotated in order to throw light on certain difficulties the foreign reader is bound to encounter, but special care has been taken to reproduce the outward form of the poem as such. The commentary is therefore meant to enrich our understanding of the text, not to impair the literary pleasure.
