  • The Poets of the First World War were faced with a lack of modes of expression that could account for the reality of the war. Traditional themes as those of nature, love or friendship were regarded in a different light and, consequently, their treatment changed.

    This article analyses the multiplicity of meanings which Wilfred Owen attributed to nature when confronted to the horrors of modern warfare. These different perspectives range from a consideration of the beneficent associations attached to the regenerating possibilities of nature, to a vision of nature as the representation of evil, as a distorted reality or as the actual enemy of man.
