• George Eliot wrote Silas Marner at the end of the first period of her career when she felt depressed and missed her earlier life in the country. Silas Marner describes her memories of rural life mixed with something of fairy tales.

  As the critics hold different and opposite points of view about this "novel", we study their opinions to find a definitive view.

  We come to the conclusion that Silas Marner is an important step in understanding George Eliot's work; is closely connected with the author's life and has always been read with interest.
