  • After a series of homogeneous tragic plays, with Lettice & Lovage (1987) Peter Shaffer changes significantly his dramatic trend by going back to comedy, the genre he had contributed to through the fifties and sixties. However, this play maintains most of the dramatic aspects that define his tragedies.

    In this paper we try to find a place for this comedy in its author's long established theatre career by analyzing which of the persistent themes in Shaffer's drama this play retains, modifies or gives up, and which new values he adds.
