    Resumen Paralelamente a la lucha para lograr el establecimiento de la tolerancia religiosa y quebrantar la avasalladora influencia de la Iglesia, se desarrollo en Chile la cuestión de los cementerios, cuyo desenvolvimiento ofrece aspectos tan dramáticos como apasionantes. Y si en la lucha por la tolerancia religiosa gravitaron otros factores que contribuyeron a facilitar su consagración, en la cuestión de los cementerios, la situación de la Iglesia era más favorable y se afianzaba en usos y costumbres seculares de donde provino la tenacidad y apasionamiento con que aquella se aferraría a éstos.

    Together with the struggle for the establishment of the religious tolerance and to break the overwhelming infl uence of the church, the question of the construction secular cemeteries grew in Chile and its development offers dramatic as well as interesting aspects. And if in the struggle for the religious tolerance extra factors contributed to facilitate its consecration, in the subject of secular cemeteries the Church was more favorable because the secular traditions and customs from which tenacity came were already consolidated.
