    Durante buena parte del siglo XIX el gusto por el teatro español en el ámbito cultural alemán debido a la influencia de la Alemania romántica aún subsistía. Muestra de ello es este drama de Grillparzer, a pesar de que la primera inspiración temática no le venga directamente de Lope de Vega sino a través del francés Cazotte. Sin embargo la influencia del teatro español, tanto de Lope como de Calderón es innegable, aunque al mismo tiempo busque un regreso a la tradición del clasicismo alemán siguiendo a Goethe y Schiller.

    During good part of the 19th century the taste for the Spanish theatre in the cultural German area was still surviving due to the influence of romantic Germany. A sample of this is Grillparzer's drama, in spite of the fact that the first thematic inspiration does not come directly from Lope de Vega but from the Frenchman Cazotte. Nevertheless the influence of the Spanish theatre, both of Lope and of Calderón is undeniable, though at the same time, this author looks for a return to the tradition of the German classicism following Goethe and Schiller.
